The Root Chakra

The chakras represent energy centres in the human body that are said to play a vital role in our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

There are seven main chakras, each associated with different aspects of our being. Today, we will focus on the root chakra, also known as the muladhara chakra. Located at the base of the spine, this energy centre is associated with the element of earth and is responsible for our sense of stability and security. When the root chakra is balanced, we feel grounded, connected to our bodies, and at home in the world. When it is out of balance, we may feel anxious, disconnected, and ungrounded.

One way to work with the root chakra is through yoga practice. Physical postures that involve grounding, such as downward facing dog and warrior poses, can help to stimulate and balance the root chakra. Paying attention to the sensation of the feet on the ground and the connection to the earth can also be helpful.

There are several yoga asanas that can help to stimulate and balance the root chakra. These include:

  1. Mountain pose (Tadasana): This standing pose helps to ground the feet and build a sense of stability and connection to the earth.

  2. Downward facing dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana): This inverted pose helps to lengthen the spine and ground the hands and feet, creating a sense of stability and connection to the earth.

  3. Warrior poses (Virabhadrasana): These standing poses help to build strength and stability in the legs, creating a sense of grounding and connection to the earth.

  4. Child's pose (Balasana): This restorative pose helps to calm the nervous system and bring a sense of grounding and connection to the earth.


In addition to physical asanas, incorporating breath work and visualization into your practice can also be helpful for balancing the root chakra. For example, focusing on the sensation of the breath and the connection to the earth during your practice can help to bring a sense of grounding and stability. Visualizing a strong, rooted tree or a mountain can also be helpful for bringing a sense of stability and security.


The root chakra has a spiritual aspect that can be explored and cultivated. Incorporating spiritual themes into your yoga practice, such as gratitude and mindfulness, can help to bring a sense of peace and connection to the present moment. Visualisation and affirmations, such as "I am safe and secure" or "I am grounded and connected to the earth," can also be helpful for balancing this chakra. The root chakra is also associated with the colour red, which can be incorporated into your practice through the use of red crystals, such as red jasper or garnet, or by visualising a red light at the base of the spine during meditation.

Taking yoga off the mat, the root chakra can also be strengthened by spending time in nature and deepening your connection with the natural world.


Overall, the root chakra is an important energy centre that is responsible for our sense of stability and security, as well as our spiritual growth and connection to a higher power. By incorporating yoga postures, breathing techniques, visualisation and affirmations into our practice, we can work to balance and strengthen this chakra. This can help us to feel more grounded, connected, and at home in the world.
